A New Project

I am going to start shooting for a new independent photo project.
I am going to go back to taking photos with a model.
This will be my first time that I will be shooting with digital and film in the same shoot.
If everything goes my way I will be hopefully putting together a new book too since the one I did for the final was really fun!

Monday looks like a no go...

So I had the unfortunate news that I have to attend a funeral on monday so I will not be in class.
If someone could let me know what we are going to be doing that would be awesome.
I figured if we were going over something new I could try it out at home.
Thanks everyone see you on Wednesday!

Shelby Lee Adams Lecture

So last night I went to see Shelby Lee Adams lecture and it was really cool.
He showed some new pictures that he shot from the last time that he has visited the families that he had become close with.

He also gave updates on some of his old subjects and had follow up photos. He also had said that he was very excited to shoot photos of fourth generation Appalachians. He had photos of the new generation of Appalachia and went briefly in to the unfortunate new trend of people making meth labs in the old abandoned coal mines.

I think that his lecture helped me understand more in depth about building relationships to gain trust with people. I think the best advise he gave is to be up front with people and to tell them right away about being a photographer and how you need to make them feel comfortable, and always give them a print.

He also let us know that he does not pay any of the people in the photos that he takes but that he always gives back to them.

2nd Retouch

I decided to share my second retouched image that I did.
I am planning on framing it and giving it to my mom for her birthday.
It is a picture of my Grandpa and his brother in there uniforms.
It's my favorite picture of him.

A Bit of a Challenge...

So I have been working on the shooting part of the project and I found that it is becoming more of a challenge then I thought it would be.
I guess I just didn't realize that 350 is a lot of photos!

About the movie "The True Meaning of Pictures: Shelby Lee Adams' Appalachia"

Today in class we watched the movie "The True Meaning of Pictures: Shelby Lee Adams' Appalachia".
In the movie not only were the pictures that Adams shown but they were critiqued and analyzed as well as having commentary not just from the artist but from the people he shot.
I believe that Adams was very sincere when he said that he was not trying to portray these familys in a negative way.
I think that by the way the families responded to him that he really did have a connection with these people and that these people never felt like they were being looked at in negative light.
I think that the bonds he made with the families was wonderful you can tell that he really did care about them. He made sure that he consulted the families and letting them have a say in the photos that went in to the book he was making.
He said that he would show the families his photos and let them approve the photos before he went and used them.
I think that some of the critics in the film were not looking at it as Adams way of showing people his family and where he grew up, rather they were looking at it as someone exploiting these people and showing the rest of the world these people who were uncivilized and poor.
I do believe that Adams was showing us a world that we might not understand, but that he would like us to.
I think that he wants us to see past the dirt and the poverty and the broken down houses and see people.

Shockingly Inspiring

I have to say that Larry Clark is one of my favorite Photographers.
His photos are raw and edgy, he leaves out all the glamor and the posing
and makes truly inspiring photographs in my opinion.
He is also a director of under ground films.
His films are just as dark as his photographs in subject manner and content.
If you like that kind of art I strongly suggest you take a look at his work.

So I decided to look up Jim Goldberg...

And I came across this photo.
I thought it was very powerful.
It kind of broke my heart when I saw it.

Testing Testing!

This is my first go around with Photoshop's Photo Raw.
The photo on the left is the original photo
and the one on the right is after editing.

Something to think about...

I checked out the post on the class blog about the photo contest on popphoto.com and decided to check out the different galleries they had and one in particular caught my eye.
There were a lot of interesting photos, but the Photographs From The Refrigerator really caught my eye. The captions are really interesting and it made me think about what my family keeps in there fridge and what it says about them.
I recommend checking out this gallery.

U.O.P Photo Gallery

Western Technosite
By: Daniel Kasser

Today I went to the U.O.P. art gallery where Daniel Kasser's artwork was being displayed.
The show all around was a very interesting show. I had some favorites from the show.

The first one that caught my eye was #12.

This photo caught my eye mostly because of the blue tone to it.
It gives it a dream like or foggy feel to it.
The object in the picture also fits very nicely in to the photo.
It makes me think of the Tim Burton film Big Fish.

All of his other work was good as well, but this kind of photography is not in my taste.
I personally think a photo can be beautiful without being manipulated.
But I do admire his patience and I think that he is a very talented photographer.
